9 Patch
Tadaaaa!! Behold, I have completed piecing my quilt!! Yes, I am working on a quilt. And no, this does not make me an old lady [or a dork....well...uh..]. :P It simply makes me.....well-rounded, and.....marketable, and....crafty, and......homemake-y, and.....COOL. That's right, I AM COOL! :D
[I actually finished it this past Saturday, but kept forgetting to post...]
This is my very first quilt. I started it September of 2003, but had to stop a month or so later due to holiday crazy busyness. It went into a nice plastic storage box never to be worked on.....until last week. I brought it back out and started working on it again with a frenzied pace. It seemed to take me forever, mainly because I had to completely relearn everything that two years had wiped from my memory. This "relearning process" caused me to do quite a bit of seam ripping as I put together several blocks wrong and generally made a mess all over the house with tiny pieces of thread. But, on Saturday evening, (after spending THE ENTIRE DAY working on it....I KID YOU NOT) I reached COMPLETION!!! Well, completion of the machine piecing part. The next step is the hand quilting, which will probably take a bit of time. I am kind of looking forward to the quilting part. I think [or at least I hope] it will be fun and relaxing. My favorite part about quilts in general has always been the "quilting"--all the neat designs and intricate stitching that, to me, make them so beautiful. Of course, this being my first quilt, I am not expecting great displays of stitching beauty to come from my hands..... ;)
So, that's my quilt. The "fall theme" is a result of me preparing to go through a Hunter's Education Course when I was picking my fabric 2 years ago. The back of the quilt will actually be this fall woods scene print that has deer all over it. Yeah. That's right. I am just that cool. haha ;)
6 Sagacious Sayings:
YEAH!!!!!!! ITS ABOUT FREAKIN' TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You started on that quilt when I still was at the Missions office!!! Holy cow woman!! Talk about procrastination! That looks great, though. Why is it called 9-patch?
I don't know if you could call it procrastination per se....I wasn't putting it off. I just put it away, and then forgot about it for 2 years. Really. I forgot about it. COMPLETELY.
If you look at one of the big squares, you can see it is made up of 9 squares [some of the squares being made up of 4-square blocks]. Its called a 9 patch because 9 "patches" make up the block. There are many different variations of the 9 patch quilt. I think either my mom or granny even has a book called 101 Nine Patch Quilts.
nice quilt...
my mom is currently working on one. what's the big deal? is it a fun thing to do or something?
It is pretty fun, IMO. There is just something about taking little scraps of fabric and turning them into something pretty [and functional--you get a nice warm blanket in the end!]. And its "easy sewing".
Its another creative outlet.
I am not a quilter (I hate to sew), but several members of my family are. Thus, I have benefited greatly from the homemade quilts of others. I must say, they're pretty awesome. Way to go!
