I Fought the Dog, and the Dog Won

Update on "Jumping" Jasper. Well, he won. No more confinement for him.

I tried everything to keep that dog contained. I had most recently tried a very creative confinement method. I had moved his crate to the door of the bathroom with the baby gate on top of it and boxes shoved tightly on one side between the door frame and the crate, but he just pushed the box out and wiggled free. He'd meet me each day at lunch and after work, either by the door, on the couch, or at the top of the stairs. But thankfully, there had been no accidents. So I gave up and gave him a 'trial run'.

The last few days, he has done very well being loose in the house. As long as I make sure to take him out for final 'business' after he has eaten his breakfast and before I leave for work, I can return home at lunch to a relaxed, smiling pooch hanging out on the couch [or under it], and 'business'-free floors. He doesn't get into any other mischief, not being much of a chewer. He likes to 'nibble' on various things, like his blanket, his rope bone, and me [not kidding, but its pretty cute]. But he pretty much limits his chewing to his nyla bone.

I hope it continues to work well for you. Just a word of caution, though...keep a sharp eye out for counter-surfing. Ours started counter-surfing after he became accustomed to being out with us not around. It can be very dangerous.

He's so cute!!! Did you not want to try the double doggie gate like we did??

Counter surfing??? What is that? Like on the kitchen counters? I don't think that will be a problem, b/c he really doesn't like going into the kitchen, we don't have very much countertop space, and I think it would be VERY high for even him. WOW. That's crazy!

No, I don't think the double gate would've worked. He climbs, not jumps. So for now, and until he REALLY messes up, he is being entrusted with this priviledge.

Yes, counter-surfing is something many dogs and cats do...they either climb up on the counters or use a chair or something to reach while they "sample" items on the counters. For us, it was bathroom counters, not kitchen.
